Loft Manager's Final Yearlings Report

Well that's that over for this year, we ended up with 19 gallant pigeons home so far, but I think that with a bit of change in the weather we may get a few more, if that change does not take too long to materialise.

To be fair to all the birds, it was an extremely tough race all round, with quite a lot of birds missing, it was not quite the race that it seemed to be, with information about birds arriving into Cork from as early as 10.30 in the morning doing 73 mph,  with the result that enthusiasm for the race wavered dramatically up the line, as it happened, the next best birds into the country were actually in our area, with club mates, Joe Brennan, Anthony Baldwin, & Tony Corcoran all of the Barrow Valley Club, provisionally, recording 3rd, 4th, & 5th open respectively, in the IHU National event.

Our first bird to be clocked, which belonged to the partnership of JJ & Liz Murphy, non fanciers, by the way, was a very creditable 4th club, with I presume a good Federation, Section, & possibly Open position to be confirmed, considering that this would be only the fourth or fifth race of their career, it was really good flying by those birds that made home on the day.

Our second bird was owned by the Roselawn Syndicate, administered by Peter Whelan, Dungarvan, this group of fanciers have had great success over the last couple of years with their entries in the Alpine One Loft Races.

Third bird home belonged to another non-fancier & a lady one at that, none other than Mag Dooley whose Belgian rung hen has given  Mag great sport & interest in following the progress of her entry over the Young bird & Yearling series, she did not quite have the confidence to pool her bird right through, but did get a nice little return for her initial investment, by the way, this hen 101 comes from the same Belgian loft as the 3rd Open winner 104 of Joe Brennan in this very same race.

Fourth & Ninth in the race is the very likeable Paddy Hackman of Bray Co Wicklow, [Dargle Lofts]. Paddy really enjoys his One Loft Racing with us and is the only person to clock both his entries in this event, given that they have put in some really hard work over the Young Bird , Then the yearling series, this is a very creditable result for Paddy, by the way, they would appear to be a nest pair, 28 & 29, but I stand corrected on that one.

Jim Etherington of Waterlooville in Hampshire is in Fifth Open position in our race, with a really nice Dark chequer Norman Southwell hen, a very consistent bird all year, she has made very few mistakes since she came here as a baby in March 2008, Jim,  through Paul O'Leary,  has been a great supporter of our Alpine Lofts One Loft Race since its inception in 2006, and is again supporting this year's young bird event.

Jimmy Hurley from the Barrow Valley Club take 6th in this years event, Jimmy has been a late starter to pigeon racing, but is enjoying every aspect of the game, which includes One Loft Racing, his timer was a blue cheq cock, another very consistent pigeon at the lofts over the whole series, and this as one can imagine is exactly what is needed in these difficult races.

7th position was taken by Peter Flanagan of Termofechin in Co Meath, Peter is another staunch supporter of One Loft Racing and derives great pleasure from entering and following the progress of his entries, that is why it is so very important for organizers to have the most up to date details of the birds entered into these events readily available as this is what participants are looking for.

Joe Macken of Laytown in Co Meath had the 10th bird home in this race, Joe along with John McNamara of Laytown are always very helpful during the early stages of each year's young bird race, by bringing down entries from their area, a gesture that is very much appreciated by the organizers.

Well,  that the Yearling part of the Alpine One Loft Race series over, All cheques for prize money & pools have been issued and will be sent out immediately.

On now to the young birds, which will be started training in short, we have many entries in from all over Ireland and abroad, so someone will get lucky and have a nice windfall come the Barlycove race on August 15th 2009 held in conjunction with the Irish Honing Union National Flying Club, a race that we feel is a major test for young birds entering their first race of the year. Best of luck to all this years competitors.

Francis &  Marguerite.  Corcoran & Keegan,  pp  Alpine Lofts.

Loft Manager's Report 15th May 2009

After a long hard struggle and lots of training and racing we now have what’s left of the 2008 Alpine One Loft Race Birds ready for their second big race day, which will take place from Sennen Cove on Saturday 30th May 2009. The Birds will be transported and raced with the Irish Homing Union National Flying Club, being Race marked on Thursday 28th May at the Carlow Marking station. Only Birds that have been activated by means of entry into this year’s young bird Alpine One Loft race will be eligible to compete for the prize money on offer for this race. All birds in the Loft at present that are capable of being sent, will be entered into the National, however only those that have been activated will win the prize money. The prize money allocated for the race is €500. This will be shared by the first three activated pigeon’s home in the following manner 1st =  €250; 2nd = €150; 3rd = €100. In the event of only one bird arriving home in race time, then that bird will win all the prizes. In the event of only two birds arriving home in race time, the 3rd prize will be shared equally between the first two. The race will close when the velocity for the race reaches 220ypm. Make no mistake, it is a great achievement for your bird to have reached this point in the competition, they have had to do so much work to get this far, their lot has been far from easy since they arrived here as long ago as February 2008, you can be sure that only the hardiest and the fittest have survived the gruelling that our One Loft Race regime has thrown at them. A full list of the activated birds entered into the race on marking night will be posted right here on the day after marking. Again, both Marguerite and I would like to wish all competitors all the best of luck in the Sennen Cove Yearling One Loft Race. May the best bird win!

Loft Manager's Report 7th May 2009

As you know the yearlings have had one race, 112 miles, since then they have had some very difficult training tosses, but are making their home in time. The next race will be Barleycove on the 16th May approx 156 miles which is just a Federation race. With good returns from that, we can then let them relax around the Lofts for the following 10 days. Just last night I have mated them up and put in nest bowls which should see them on 10 to 18 day eggs for the final race, at this point. Prize money will total €500 where 1st =  €250; 2nd = €150; 3rd = €100. Sennen Cove will not be an easy race, especially for pigeons that have had so much hardship, however we are putting in a mighty effort to have a really good race, so much so that I am really looking forward to the challenge!
