Sunday 22 August - South Midlands - All

Sunday 15 August - South Midlands - All

It was an early start for both Tom and I as we embarked on our first bit of serious training for the pigeons.

Week Ending 13 August 2004

The great British weather has proved totally exasperating for us this week. Doubtless you have had the same experience at your home lofts. An attempted toss on Monday had to be aborted and the weather has been variable at best, and atrocious at its worst, since then. We did however get the Cocks and the Hens to Basingstoke today in a SW wind so this will have provided a decent test for the pigeons.

On Sunday, weather permitting, Paul hopes to take all the pigeons for a 80 - 100 training race. We will put up a couple of prizes for the first two pigeons recorded by the Unikon system ... 1st prize will be an Epson All-in-One Printer (print, fax, scan) and 2nd Prize will be one of the brilliant new LoftMate devices.

We considered the possibility of sending all the pigeons to Guernsey next weekend with the Central Southern Classic Flying Club, as "trainers". However our heads have ruled our hearts and, because we lie towards the Eastern extremity of the CSCFC's boundaries we would be extremely vulnerable to a race with any kind of East in the wind and we cannot afford to take such a risk with the Lamballe race approaching. Instead we will plan for a 100-120 private toss instead.

Week Ending 6 August 2004

Training has been stepped up to around 30 miles this week and therefore providing a decent education for the pigeons. This week as you can see we've trained North but please don't read anything into this ... located where we are South road training is infeasible even pointless. The pigeons are being trained in two batches ... cocks and hens. This hopefully has the twin effects of quicker trapping on arrival and, should we encounter a smash, reducing losses. By the end of August we will have put some near 100 mile tosses into the pigeons so there ought not be any excuses (fitness-wise) by the time of the Lamballe race on 11th September.
