12 beautiful “Southwell” pigeons are on offer here, 2017 and 2018 bred. Norman Southwell, after whom the strain is named, was a legend in long distance National racing from Pau back in the day, frequently in the top 20 in the Open, and also a winner three times of the prestigious NFC Langstone Gold Cup. Unlike many strains, this strain has survived the tough test of time with no need for re-branding, and even today there are several long distance lofts achieving fabulous results with these birds at the distance. John McLaren, Ernie Deacon, Albie Deacon, Paul Stone, to name but a few have done exceptionally well with these birds, sometimes crossed into other long distance strains such as Vandenbroukes. So, this is a very old distance family that still manages to be ‘current’ … a very rare thing. Danny Longhurst was a friend of Norman’s in his heyday, first obtaining birds from Norman as the result of helping Norman out in his hour of need by getting some hay through to Norman’s herd of Freisians when Norman’s farm was completely cut-off by bad weather. Danny has never crossed them out in the 45 years he has kept them, keeping them as pure as can be. So, these are still very much the pigeons as they were. Time and fitness has caught up with Danny, plus he has not raced since losing his beloved wife, Jean. In recent years Danny has gifted more birds than he has sold, but a recent fall and the realisation that he can no longer be as hands-on with the birds he now realises he needs to cut down on the number of birds he keeps. Unfortunately there will be no pedigrees with these birds, nor any professional photography. Danny is not in the least bit commercial, but really wants to see these exceptional birds getting into good hands and would get nothing but sheer pleasure from hearing how well these birds do in their new lofts, given a new lease of life so to speak.
